May 3rd, in New York City, Zoland translators Forrest Gander, Fanny Howe, Stephanie Sandler, and Genya Turovskaya presented their translations featured in the first two Zoland Poetry annuals. This PEN World Voices event was co-sponsored by the Poetry Society of America and the Creative Writing Program at NYU. The NYU venue on W.10th was packed and booksales were brisk. Besides copies of the first two Zoland Poetry annuals, the audience picked up Forrest Gander's translations of Mexican poet Coral Bracho Firefly Under the Tongue (New Directions, 2008) and A Wall of Two (UC Press, 2008) by Henia and Ilona Karmel, adaptated by Fanny Howe, from Polish translations by Arie A. Galles and Warren Niesluchowski.
As an unexpected bonus, Warren happened to be passing through New York, and accompanied Fanny by reading several of the poems in the original Polish, and then the event was brought to a graceful end with Coral Bracho treating everyone to a final poem in Spanish.
